New Trier’s Special Olympics team meets every Wednesday evening to practice with Special Olympics athletes and peer coaches who range in age from freshman to transition aged (18-22 years old). As a peer coach I work 1:1 with a designated athlete, supporting them in warm-ups, skills practice, sports games, and teambuilding exercises. A few times each year, we compete at neighboring schools and, in the spring, at the Illinois Special Olympics Track and Field Meet. Whether it’s a random Wednesday night, or an exciting travel game day, Special Olympics always brings me so much joy and is a highlight of my week. Every Wednesday after Special Olympics practice, I go to Homer’s Ice Cream with two athletes, Brooke and Izzy. Every Wednesday night. And hence, if anyone were to ask me my favorite night of the week, I wouldn’t say Friday or Saturday night. Without hesitation, I’d say Wednesday night, every time.
